As a kid, you may have been told by your parents to be on your best behavior in certain settings. For some, this meant “minding their manners,” using the right fork and spoon, and saying “please” and “thank you.” These behaviors are taught at a young age, and while they serve a purpose to some degree, behavioral health is about so much more than minding yours P’s and Q’s.

The Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Center (PLMC)

The Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Center (PLMC) sees behavioral health as one of the five most important functions of overall health. We refer to these as the 5 Functions of Health. The 5 Functions of Health are based on the scientific principles known as the 5 Pillars of Health: sleep, exercise/movement, nutrition, stress management, and relationships/community.

Functions of Health

The PLMC so different from other healthcare providers is in how we define health and wellness. Whereas others see health as the absence of disease, we see it as a measure of function. The 5 Functions of Health are interconnected, with each one influencing the others.

Behavioral Health

Behavioral function is one of the more complicated functions of health to define. The PLMC looks at behavioral health as how an individual carries out his or her daily lifestyle.

Behavioral function

We consider everything, including their attitude toward change and the likelihood of addictive behaviors or negative habits. The goal is to form healthy habits that can become the foundation for positive and sustainable living. The changes we make in our behavioral health have the potential to be lifesaving. In other words, a positive or negative behavioral function can have a globally positive or negative effect on all four other functions of health.

Some of the ways we assess behavioral function and fitness are with the following evaluations:

  • Self- care

Why Metabolic Health Matters

The body’s ability to process, store, and use nutrients is integral to its function on a physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral level. A healthy metabolism supports everyday functioning in a way that contributes to holistic health and wellbeing.

The PLMC sees health and wellness differently than from most other healthcare providers. Instead of singling out just one symptom, we see symptoms as indications that certain systems are not working in unison. As such, we aim to get to the root of the issues within each function of health to help our patients live better, more fulfilled lives. The five measurable components that make up the 5 Functions of Health provide both us and our patients with valuable insight and useful information. Work with us to repair your metabolic health and see change, improvement, and results in your function of life
